Mount Ambrin Whithorn Jamaica (288 images)

I took these photos on a trip to Jamaica with friends in 2006 and a solo visit in 2009. Mount Ambrin was at that time a resort owned by a wealthy American Optometrist (Doctor Russ) from the west coast of the U.S. San Francisco or Seattle. On my earlier visit I met the owner and he told me that he had met some the Sudanese refugees who were working in the gardens at his west coast home, members of The Lost Boys Of The Sudan, and it fueled in him a mission to expose the violence that is committed upon Black men. He bought a villa in Jamaica from the famous American author Alex Haley, who wrote the novel “Roots” and he turned the property into a mountain-top art gallery, museum and performance center. He famously flew a planeload of American critics from the NYC to his new home where they toured what he had built and enjoyed a piano concert performance from a local prodigy pianist. I don't know if this place is still open. The last I heard it was for sale. 9 December 2021
